Natural Kitchen Ingredients
Coffee Grounds: If you’re a coffee lover, you’ll love this trick! Take a baking sheet and fresh, dry coffee grounds; spread the coffee grounds evenly across the baking sheet and slide it inside your refrigerator. If you can make room, it’s better to have the baking sheet lying by itself. This will also keep you and others from knocking it over and spilling the coffee grounds. Leave the sheet inside your fridge for a few days and the bad smells should disappear.
Vanilla: Vanilla extract is an easy way to get rid of bad odors in your fridge. Simply take fresh cotton balls or pads and soak them in vanilla extract, then place them in a bowl and place it inside your fridge. Again, your fridge should be odor free in a few days.
Baking Soda: Baking soda seems to be the cure all for appliance maintenance; not only does it work great for cleaning your fridge interior, but it can also get rid of nasty smells. Similar to the coffee grounds, take a baking sheet and a box of baking soda and evenly spread the baking soda over the sheet. Then place it in your fridge; your fridge needs to stay closed for several hours for the baking soda to remove the stench. You can also keep a small, open box of baking soda in your fridge on a regular basis to keep smells at bay. Just be careful not to knock it over!
Oranges or Lemons: If you notice the smell is coming from a particular area of your fridge or freezer, you can use orange slices, which will get rid of the odor of just about anything. Plus the oranges will leave your fridge with a pleasant citrus smell. Lemons will do the trick as well.
Oats: Another quick solution to getting rid of smelly odors in your fridge is to use oats. Pour the oats into a bowl and and leave it in your fridge for a couple of hours. You can do this overnight to ensure that your fridge won’t be opened as much. The oats should suck the gnarly smells right out of your fridge.
Vinegar: Another multi-purpose ingredient you’re likely to already have in your kitchen – white vinegar. Pour a small amount of vinegar in a cup or bowl, 1 cup of vinegar should be more than enough, and leave it in your fridge until the stinky smells disappear. The smell of the vinegar will leave once you remove it. For a quick de-stink, mix the vinegar with water and wipe down the interior of your fridge.
Activated Charcoal: Activated charcoal is another way to remove bad smells from your fridge; activated charcoal is coal or wood that has been heated at high temperatures to increase it adsorptive abilities. Take a couple of bowls and place the charcoal in them, then leave in them in the fridge for three days. The fridge should be set to the minimum temperature; you should also place food in another area for safe keeping, as the the fridge door should be left shut during this time. After three days that charcoal should have absorbed any remaining odors.
Don’t forget that regular maintenance and repair will keep your fridge smelling and working better for longer!
