While repairs can be expensive, trying to save yourself money by doing the repair on your own can be just as expensive if you don’t know what you’re doing and make a mistake, causing more damage. You can also hurt yourself if you don’t know how to do the repairs properly, or don’t know the right safety procedures.
Safety procedures and precautions are important for several reasons. If you need an appliance repair, consider
calling a certified technician, like the ones at Quick Appliance Repair. All of our technicians have been trained and know the proper safety procedures for working with all major appliances. If you are deadset on doing the repair yourself, read these safety tips first. If at any point you are unsure or feel unsafe, call us for same day repair.
Keep area dry: Ice will naturally start to thaw once the power to the unit is cut off. This can create leaks and condensation that might make its way onto electrical plugs. If the refrigerator has been unplugged for a long period of time, make sure that floor around the fridge is kept dry.
Clean Vents: Remove any dust, lint and debris from the ventilation grill to ensure the fridge/freezer has proper airflow.
Remove flammable objects: anything that is flammable, such as napkins, paper and towels, should be kept away from the appliance while you are working on it to prevent fire.
Clean grease: If there is any grease in the oven or around the burners, clean it up before starting the repair to reduce the risk of a fire.
Pilot light: If you are working on a gas range oven/stove, make sure that the pilot light is turned off before starting any repairs or maintenance.
Flammable items: Keep items like cleaning products or boxes away from the dryer in case it overheats.
Air flow: Make sure that the dryer’s lint tray and exhaust pipe are properly cleaned for sufficient airflow and also to reduce the risk of combustion, especially when doing electrical testing.
Spills: When a washing machine is being repaired it is more prone to leaks and water spills. Make sure the floor is kept dry to prevent water from getting on any electrical components, and to keep people from slipping.
Power: Always make sure that electric power or the gas supply is off and completely disconnected before you start any maintenance or repairs. If you need to turn the power back on to test something, don’t touch the appliance but stand back and observe instead. If you need to make adjustments turn the power back off before you start to make them. This is very important to ensure that you don’t injure yourself.
Inexperienced: If you are inexperienced or don’t feel comfortable repairing your appliances yourself, don’t do it. Call an experienced technician who has had training to do it for you. It will be much safer for you as you won’t be putting yourself at risk for injury. It will also ensure that your appliance isn’t damaged more, which can happen if you make a mistake; this will also keep repair cost down.
